What actually happened

San Francisco had 1:42, one timeout, and 85 yards of field to cover. It took two plays to end the game.

The first was Bradley Chubb coming off the edge and dropping Garoppolo at his own 3, a 12-yard loss that ate the clock and left the 49ers with a long throw and no margin. The second was a short pass to Jeff Wilson that went for 16 yards and ended with the ball on the ground. Denver recovered.

That was it. 11–10, Broncos, in a game where the two teams combined for 21 points and one trip to the end zone each.

The lesson is the one every quarterback hears in August and forgets in September. At 1:42 with one timeout, a sack is not just minus twelve. It is minus twelve and forty seconds, and it turns a normal drive into a desperation throw with the pocket collapsing.

Garoppolo never got the ball back. The only thing anybody remembered was the edge rusher who ended it.
