What actually happened
Russell Wilson came back to Seattle for the first time since the trade, and the crowd had spent the night booing him. With 4:02 on the clock his Broncos took over at their own 22, down a point, three timeouts in hand. Everything a quarterback could ask for.
The drive never really moved. Melvin Gordon got five on the first snap, Wilson missed Jeudy on the second, then found Albert Okwuegbunam twice for five and six. Gordon picked up two more before the two-minute warning. Out of the warning it was nine yards to Javonte Williams, then a four-yard loss, then an incompletion. They kept the chains moving anyway — nine more to Williams, out to the Seattle 46 — and with twenty seconds left the field goal unit came on.
Hackett didn't go for it on fourth down. He sent Brandon McManus out for 64 yards. McManus had already hit from 26 earlier in the game. This one went wide left, and Seattle kneeled three times to run out a 17–16 win.
Thirty-two yards of net offense, and one kick that needed a small miracle. A year of questions in Denver started right there.
