What actually happened
Baker Mayfield's first game against the team that traded him, and the ball with 2:14 and one timeout.
He made the most of it. Twenty-six yards to DJ Moore, then a 21-yard throw to Christian McCaffrey that came with a horse-collar penalty attached. Carolina went from its own 20 to the Cleveland 15 in four plays.
Then the drive stalled the way these drives do. A fumbled snap that Mayfield recovered himself. Two McCaffrey runs for minus a yard. A third-down stop that left Eddy Pineiro kicking from 34.
Pineiro made it. 24–23, Carolina, 1:13 left. For about a minute, Mayfield had beaten his old team.
Then Cade York, a rookie kicker in his first NFL game, hit from 58 yards with eight seconds left. 26–24, Browns.
Three lead changes in two minutes, and a reminder that a drill does not end when your kicker makes his. It ends when there is no time left for the other sideline to answer. There was 1:13 left.
